Melanoma - the most dangerous type of skin cancer

3 reading_minutes

Skin health is an integral part of male vitality and longevity. As we age, skin elasticity decreases and the risk of pigmentary changes and skin diseases, including melanoma - the most aggressive form of skin cancer - increases. However, men often neglect dermatological care, which can lead to late detection of serious problems. Regular dermatological check-ups and professional prevention are therefore crucial to maintaining healthy skin and overall health.

What is melanoma?

Melanoma is the most aggressive form of skin cancer, arising from melanocytes-the cells responsible for skin pigmentation. It can occur not only on the skin, but also on the mucous membranes or in the eye. The main risk factors include overexposure to UV radiation, genetic predisposition and skin damage.

What is the aggressiveness of melanoma?

Melanoma has the ability to metastasize rapidly to lymph nodes, lungs, liver and other organs. It often progresses without visible symptoms, making it a serious threat if diagnosed late. Early detection is therefore essential for successful treatment and preservation of quality of life.

Statistics and importance of early detection of melanoma

In the Czech Republic, melanoma is the seventh most common cancer, and the number of patients with this disease is steadily increasing. If melanoma is detected at an early stage, the survival rate exceeds 98%. In advanced stages, however, the five-year survival rate drops below 30%. These data underline the need for regular dermatological examinations.

Diagnosis of melanoma

Early diagnosis of melanoma is quick and easy thanks to dermatoscopic examination. This non-invasive procedure allows the dermatologist to detect dangerous changes in the moles at an early stage. A short visit is all it takes, during which the specialist assesses the formations on the skin and makes recommendations. The dermatoscope thus plays a key role in the prevention and early diagnosis of melanoma.

Prevention: the key to protection

Successful melanoma prevention is not difficult, but it requires regularity and consistency:

UV protection: use high SPF creams, wear protective clothing and avoid direct sunlight during midday.

Regular check-ups of moles: see a dermatologist at least once a year, or more often if you belong to a high-risk group.

Skin self-examination: observe changes in moles according to the ABCDE rule (asymmetry, margins, colour, diameter, evolution over time).
